Weekly Tip: Customizing your Project Types and Action Contexts (Part 1)

Project Types and Action Contexts are the eProductivity "buckets" into which you classify your work. One such bucket might be "Calls", which lists the phone calls you need to make. This follows the GTD principle of defining your work into the context in which it can actually be done. If you have a phone handy and a "Calls" list to plow through, defining your work this way is very productive.

In eProductivity, your Project Types and Action Contexts appear in the left-hand navigator. One benefit of this setup is that it allows you to drag-and-drop emails into the navigator and create projects/actions with a single click.

What's also cool is that the navigator is highly customizable. That's what this mini-series is all about: customizing your eProductivity "buckets" and how they appear on the navigator.

Selecting from the Predefined Options
eProductivity ships with a large amount of predefined project types and action contexts. By default, a handful of the most popular ones are enabled out of the box. These are the ones that first appear on your eProductivity navigator.

But you can customize your eProductivity navigator far beyond just the default options. For instance, here's an example navigator with some Project Types and Action Context beyond just the default:

So How Do I Change the Predefined Options?
It's easily done. Go into the eProductivity preferences and look for the Projects & Actions > Contexts section, as shown below.

For this week, we're just concentrating on Section 1 - Selecting from existing contexts.

From this predefined set of project types and action contexts, pick and choose the ones that most appeal to you (Note the listed limits on how many you can choose). Once you're happy with your selection, click the "Update Context List" button, and then save and close the eProductivity preferences.

You will then need to close and reopen your mail file for the changes to take effect. Your eProductivity navigator will then be updated with your chosen list of project types and action contexts.

Customizing context using the predefined options
This week's tip helps you customize your list of eProductivity "buckets" so that the software matches how you choose to define your work.

Part 2 is about defining your own custom "buckets" and it's coming your way next week!
